Cyprus defense minister comments on UN buffer zone incident in Pyla
On April 17, 2026, Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas expressed satisfaction with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp) for their intervention following the recent sighting of Turkish tanks near the buffer zone village of Pyla, close to the British Dhekelia base. The UN responded to the presence of the tanks by deploying vehicles as a precautionary measure, noting that the tanks remained north of the ceasefire line at all times. Minister Palmas stated that maintaining order in the buffer zone is a prerequisite for resolving the Cyprus problem and called for a firm, consistent stance from UN forces. He also responded to comments made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who argued that the presence of foreign forces in the region should not be permanent. Palmas rejected this criticism, citing the ongoing presence of Turkish troops in the north of the island as an incompatible stance. Furthermore, the minister reiterated Cyprus' right to engage in military cooperation with other states for regional security. The incident has been officially reported to the United Nations Security Council.
