District Local Government Organizations address building safety and permitting processes

District Local Government Organizations (EOA) in Larnaca and Famagusta are prioritizing the management of dangerous buildings and the acceleration of permitting procedures. In Larnaca, the EOA is evaluating 565 inherited files and intends to create a public platform to list hazardous structures, citing the need for better legislative tools to handle evacuations and demolitions. Meanwhile, in Famagusta, President Yiannis Karousos reported 26 identified dangerous buildings and announced a re-evaluation process in collaboration with ETEK. Additionally, the Famagusta EOA reported a significant increase in permit issuance, completing 2,384 planning and building permits in 2025 compared to 698 in 2024. This trend has continued into 2026, with 641 permits issued by March, showing monthly growth percentages ranging from 8.66% to 44% compared to previous periods. Both organizations emphasize that current legislative frameworks are time-consuming and require further strengthening to ensure public safety and operational efficiency.
