Tourism sector in Limassol reports booking cancellations due to regional geopolitical tensions

The tourism industry in Limassol, Cyprus, is experiencing a downturn due to international media coverage regarding the conflict in Iran, which has created a perception that Cyprus is in a war zone. Andreas Tsouloftas, President of the Limassol Tourism Development Company, reported an increase in cancellations, citing flight suspensions by airlines such as Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines as contributing factors. Christos Angelides, General Manager of the Cyprus Hotels Association (PASYXE), confirmed that booking cancellations reached approximately 42% in both March and April, with the trend continuing into May. Chrysaimili Psylogeni, General Manager of the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises (STEK), noted that hotel occupancy is below initial projections, causing uncertainty for the remainder of the season. Industry representatives maintain that the country remains a safe destination and are collaborating with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to mitigate losses. Meanwhile, local authorities are focusing on long-term initiatives to establish Limassol as a year-round destination through infrastructure projects and thematic route developments. Despite these strategic plans, the sector currently faces significant market instability and reduced demand.
