UK government faces scrutiny over Peter Mandelson's vetting failure
The British government confirmed on Thursday that former US ambassador Peter Mandelson failed his security vetting prior to taking office, a fact that was kept from Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the time. Foreign ministry officials reportedly overruled the security recommendation, allowing the appointment to proceed. Mandelson was subsequently fired in September following revelations that he misled the government regarding his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegedly leaked government documents. Prime Minister Starmer stated he was unaware of the vetting failure until recently and has initiated an internal review. Senior minister Darren Jones confirmed that the government intends to update Parliament on the matter this coming Monday. Opposition leaders, including Liberal Democrat Ed Davey, have called for Starmer's resignation, alleging that the Prime Minister misled Parliament and the public. Reports suggest that Ollie Robbins, a senior foreign ministry official, is expected to leave his position due to the mishandling of the appointment process. The government has pledged to address weaknesses in the security vetting system.
