Nicolas Aimiliou resigns as Advocate General to join the European Court of Human Rights
On Thursday, Nicolas Aimiliou submitted his letter of resignation from the position of Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The document was addressed to the President of the Court, Koen Lenaerts. This move facilitates his transition to the position of Judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) representing Cyprus. His appointment to the new role follows an election held on January 27, 2026, by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). The transition to the ECHR is scheduled to take effect on April 27, 2026. The resignation was confirmed by Mr. Aimiliou himself to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). No issues or disputes were reported regarding his departure from the CJEU. The procedure is a standard administrative transition following his election to the international judiciary body.
