Political dispute over indefinite-term teachers in Cyprus
The Parliament of Cyprus recently voted to override President Nikos Christodoulides' veto regarding a bill that prohibits the redundancy of indefinite-term teachers. AKEL and other supporting parties argue that this legislation corrects a long-standing inequality, as similar protections already exist for the broader civil service. DISY, the only party to support the President's veto, criticized the legislation as unconstitutional and populist. DISY officials stated that the bill was drafted hastily for political gains ahead of upcoming elections. They further asserted that their own previous policies have already sufficiently addressed the rights and job security of these employees. In response, AKEL accused DISY of aligning itself against the interests of educators. The dispute highlights the ongoing tension between the ruling government and opposition parties regarding public sector labor laws.
