Cyprus parliament legalizes dashcam usage in vehicles
On Thursday, the Cyprus House of Representatives passed the Road Safety (Amendment) (No. 4) Law of 2025, formalizing the use of dashcams. Sponsored by MP Stavros Papadouris of the Ecologists, the legislation passed with 19 votes in favor and 16 against, with one abstention from MP Pavlos Mylonas. The law permits recording devices in private, commercial, and public-sector vehicles for safety and incident investigation purposes. Recordings are restricted by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) standards, and the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection will oversee operations. The final text explicitly prohibits audio recording and the public sharing of footage containing third parties without consent. While proponents argue the law fills a regulatory vacuum for cameras already in use, opponents, including AKEL and ELAM, expressed concerns regarding privacy and the potential for increased surveillance. Recorded data will be accessible primarily for judicial proceedings or police investigations into accidents and criminal activity.
