Greece and Cyprus discuss potential transfer of Leopard 1A5 tanks

Greece and Cyprus are engaged in advanced negotiations regarding the transfer of German-made Leopard 1A5 battle tanks from Greek military stocks to the Cypriot National Guard. This initiative aims to address operational challenges related to the maintenance of the existing 82 Russian-made T-80 tanks, which have become difficult to service due to international sanctions. The plan includes upgrading the Leopard tanks with improved armour and modern systems before their delivery. Previous considerations to acquire Israeli Merkava tanks were abandoned due to long delivery timelines. The coordination is led by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and the Cyprus National Guard General Staff, involving General Dimitrios Choupis and Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou. Additionally, the deal reportedly includes the provision of four Kentavros anti-drone systems to Cyprus. While Greek officials frame this as a modernization effort, some foreign media reports have interpreted the move as a significant shift in regional military balance. Both Greek and Cypriot defense ministries continue to negotiate the final details of the procurement.
