Russian-linked hackers compromise email accounts of officials and military staff
A cybersecurity research group, Ctrl-Alt-Intel, discovered that hackers linked to Russia compromised at least 284 email accounts between September 2024 and March 2026. The hackers inadvertently exposed their own server data, which included logs of successful attacks and thousands of intercepted emails. The targets included prosecutors and officials across Ukraine, NATO countries, and the Balkans. Specifically, 27 email accounts belonging to the Hellenic National Defence General Staff were affected. According to Greek officials, these were unclassified accounts that did not contain secret or sensitive military information. The campaign is attributed by investigators to the group known as Fancy Bear, though some experts remain cautious regarding the exact identity of the actors. The Russian embassy in Washington did not provide a comment, and Moscow continues to deny involvement in state-sponsored cyberattacks. The breach was first reported last month, with Reuters confirming the details through primary source analysis.
