Andros Kyprianou denies involvement in 2020 high-level legal appointments
Former Akel secretary-general Andros Kyprianou has publicly denied allegations that he negotiated a compromise regarding the 2020 appointments of Attorney-General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney-General Savvas Angelides. In a radio interview on Wednesday, Kyprianou addressed claims made by author Makarios Drousiotis, which suggested that these appointments were part of a deal to prevent the nomination of former justice minister Ionas Nicolaou. Kyprianou specifically refuted assertions that former supreme court judge Myron Nikolatos had lobbied him to support Savvides for the position. He stated that his interactions with Nikolatos were limited to formal and social settings and emphasized that he held no authority over presidential appointments. Kyprianou questioned the motivations behind Drousiotis’ claims, suggesting that individuals should take responsibility for their own actions rather than casting blame on others. He concluded by criticizing the inclusion of Nikolatos in these reports, labeling the entire narrative as unfounded.
