Donald Trump comments on Hungarian election results and Iran ceasefire
US President Donald Trump stated he is not concerned by the election defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who held power for 16 years. Trump praised the election winner and new Prime Minister Peter Magyar, leader of the TISZA party, describing him as a good person who will do a good job. Magyar, a pro-European conservative, rose to prominence in early 2024. Trump noted that he did not intervene in the campaign and questioned whether his personal presence would have helped Orban, who was trailing in polls. Vice President JD Vance had previously visited Budapest to support Orban and expressed regret over the election results, while pledging that the US would work well with the new administration. Separately, Trump told journalist Jonathan Karl that he does not intend to extend the ceasefire with Iran. He suggested the conflict could end through either a negotiated deal or military action, claiming that extremist elements within the Iranian leadership have been removed.
