Entso-e clarifies position on Cyprus electrical interconnection projects

On April 10, 2026, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) issued an official statement regarding electrical interconnection projects involving Cyprus. The organization clarified that it will not include any project in its Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) that lacks the consent of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (Cyprus TSO). The Cyprus TSO is recognized as the sole certified operator for the entire territory of the Republic of Cyprus under EU law. ENTSO-E confirmed that the 'Great Sea Interconnector' is currently the only interconnection project included in the European plan, as it fully complies with EU Regulation 2022/869. This announcement was made in response to reports in Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot media concerning potential additional electricity connections with Cyprus. ENTSO-E emphasized that it does not serve as a licensing authority but is responsible for drafting the European infrastructure development plan to ensure a secure energy transition. The organization reiterated its commitment to transparency and regulatory consistency across all 42 of its member transmission system operators.
