European Council President Antonio Costa visits Gulf nations to discuss regional stability
European Council President Antonio Costa is conducting a diplomatic tour of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar on April 14–15. During meetings with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Costa aims to foster regional cooperation and security. In a CNN interview, Costa reiterated the EU's commitment to the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, supporting the UK and France-led 'coalition of the willing'. Regarding the Middle East, he stated that Hezbollah poses a threat to regional and international security and advocated for the empowerment of the Lebanese army to achieve disarmament. When asked about Israel's actions in Lebanon, he acknowledged concerns regarding international law compliance while also noting Hezbollah's strikes against EU member state Cyprus. He maintained that the EU's position on Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs remains focused on diplomatic solutions. The tour emphasizes the EU's goal of preventing escalations and protecting regional interests through direct dialogue with Gulf partners.
