Livestock farmers protest against foot-and-mouth disease culling policies
Livestock farmers across Cyprus are planning a protest at the Rizoelia roundabout on Thursday, April 23, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM, to oppose the mandatory culling of livestock due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The protesters, led by spokesperson Stella Petrou, argue that current government culling protocols are excessive and demand a shift toward alternative measures allowed under EU regulation 2020/687, rather than total herd destruction. This follows an unsuccessful meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture's General Director, Andreas Grigoriou. As of April 22, 2026, 102 units have been affected, with over 62,000 animals slated for culling. Police spokesperson Byron Byronos confirmed that security measures are in place to ensure the protest does not disrupt the unofficial EU Summit scheduled for the evening, noting plans for immediate intervention if needed. While farmers threaten to target airports next if their demands remain unmet, major agricultural unions have chosen not to participate, citing concerns over further spreading the virus. The Ministry of Agriculture is expected to publish a list of compensation details for affected farmers by next Monday.
