New trial begins in Argentina regarding the death of Diego Maradona

Maradona died while recovering at home from neurosurgery for a brain hematoma. Seven healthcare professionals, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, face charges of homicide with potential intent, which carries prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. Prosecutors describe the home medical care provided as insufficient and negligent, terming the environment a 'theater of horror.' The defense teams maintain that the medical professionals fulfilled their roles and deny any criminal responsibility. The trial follows the collapse of a previous judicial process in 2024, which was annulled after a judge was found violating court rules by participating in a documentary filming. The court is expected to hear testimony from nearly 100 witnesses over at least three months, with one nurse, Dahiana Madrid, being tried separately.
