Trial for the death of Diego Maradona resumes in Argentina

The trial of seven medical professionals accused of negligent homicide in the death of football legend Diego Maradona has restarted in San Isidro, Argentina. Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, following a cardiac arrest while recovering from brain surgery. The case was previously declared a mistrial in 2025 after a judge resigned for violating court protocols by participating in a documentary. Prosecutors argue that the defendants failed to provide adequate care, describing the conditions at the recovery site as a 'house of horrors.' The defense team denies any wrongdoing, maintaining that the medical staff followed established protocols. Nearly 100 witnesses are expected to testify during the proceedings. Among the accused are neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, while nurse Dahiana Madrid will be tried separately. The court must now re-examine forensic evidence, audio recordings, and photographs presented in the initial phase.
