Journalist Manolis Mavrommatis has publicly discussed the February 2024 fire at his home in Kolonaki, which resulted in the death of his wife, Rena Venieri. Mavrommatis spent approximately 3.5 years in hospital and rehabilitation following the incident, including 1.5 years at the G. Gennimatas Hospital. He described attempting to rescue his wife, who did not leave her seat during the fire, but ultimately failing to save her. The journalist noted that his recovery is ongoing and is emotionally linked to the loss of his wife. His son temporarily left his job in England to support him through the recovery process and daily challenges. Mavrommatis characterized the event as an unexpected and total tragedy. He expressed gratitude for his son's assistance in ensuring he did not remain confined to a room permanently.
