Over 500 dangerous buildings identified in Larnaca district

Angelos Chatzicharalambous, President of the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization (EOA), stated that there are more than 500 dangerous buildings located within the city and district of Larnaca. These structures are distributed across various areas, including the Agios Ioannis neighborhood, the Turkish-Cypriot quarter, Lefkara, and other communities. Chatzicharalambous noted that many of these are listed as heritage buildings, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Town Planning within the Ministry of Interior rather than the EOA. Since April 1, 2025, the EOA has been legally responsible for managing dangerous infrastructure, though the organization claims it lacks the necessary dedicated structures and resources. Currently, the EOA is utilizing existing, limited staff and financial resources to address the issue. Discussions have been initiated with local municipalities and the District Administration, which previously managed these properties. The EOA is currently conducting an initial audit and is working to establish a formal framework to prioritize and manage these dangerous structures.
