Dangerous buildings identified in Nicosia and Larnaca
Since April 1, 2025, Provincial Self-Government Organizations (EOA) in Cyprus have assumed responsibility for managing dangerous buildings. In Nicosia, authorities have identified 1,466 such structures, including 268 added since the EOA took over. Four of these are currently deemed critical and require immediate evacuation, with one located in the city center and three in Strovolos settlements. No evacuations have been completed to date, though eviction orders are in progress. Meanwhile, in Larnaca, over 500 dangerous buildings have been recorded, though some fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Town Planning. EOA officials highlight that they lack sufficient resources and staff to address these issues effectively. Costs for remedial actions in Nicosia are estimated at 2.3 million euros, while a government grant of 2 million euros is being allocated to cover all provincial organizations over a two-year period. Authorities emphasize the need for faster legal procedures, noting that some cases involving property owners have languished in court for up to three years.
