Tensions ease in Pergamos and Pyla buffer zone

Following a standoff on Wednesday, Turkish armored vehicles were withdrawn from the Pergamos and Pyla buffer zone area by Thursday. UN peacekeeping forces (UNFICYP) maintain a heightened presence in the region, conducting patrols and road closures to monitor the situation. While the armored vehicles and a military tent have been removed, a Turkish flag and an antenna remain at an elevated position. UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique stated that peacekeepers are in active communication with all parties to maintain the status quo. Reports from Turkish Cypriot sources suggested the initial deployment was a response to alleged illegal crossings by Greek Cypriot authorities, a claim linked to disease control concerns. British Base police also maintained an increased presence in the vicinity as a precautionary measure. Political entities, including AKEL, condemned the initial actions as provocative and called for a de-escalation of tensions. The UN emphasized that no military assets are currently inside the buffer zone, clarifying that earlier reports of military equipment within the zone were based on sightings of structures located north of the ceasefire line.
