UNFICYP reports unauthorized entry by Turkish Cypriot personnel into the Pyla buffer zone
The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) reported that Turkish Cypriot security personnel entered the buffer zone in the Pyla area without authorization on April 13, 2026. In response, the peacekeeping force has increased its patrols and maintained a visible presence to monitor the situation. UNFICYP stated that any unauthorized entry or activity within the buffer zone constitutes a violation of its mandate. The mission is currently communicating with all involved parties to restore the status quo ante and maintain stability. The Turkish Cypriot 'Foreign Ministry' issued a formal statement strongly rejecting the claims of unauthorized activity. They asserted that the area in question, identified as Cayhan Duzu, falls entirely within the territory and sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Consequently, they characterized the UN's description of the region as a 'buffer zone' as unacceptable. UNFICYP continues to prioritize the maintenance of calm and stability in the sensitive area.
