UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix visits Cyprus amid buffer zone tensions

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has arrived in Cyprus for a two-day visit focused on the stability of the island and the role of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). During his stay, Lacroix is scheduled to hold a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday morning at the Presidential Palace. The official's agenda includes discussions with representatives from both communities, the UNFICYP leadership, diplomatic staff, and civil society, including youth and women's groups. A primary objective of the mission is to address recent tensions in the buffer zone, particularly in the Pyla area, where the UN has reported systematic attempts to alter the status quo. The UN Department of Peace Operations informed the Security Council that a pattern of increasing restrictions has been observed on the Pyla plateau since February 2026. Lacroix will assess the situation on the ground, facilitate dialogue, and oversee efforts to prevent further escalations. Meanwhile, the Cyprus government continues to monitor the situation, reporting a recent incident in the Plati area north of Pyla that caused tension due to violations of the buffer zone.
