UN peace operations chief visits Cyprus to discuss buffer zone tensions
On April 21, 2026, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix met with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia to discuss the situation in the UN-controlled buffer zone. Lacroix, who visited Pyla earlier that day, emphasized that maintaining calm and de-escalating tensions is essential for the resumption of peace negotiations. President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of UNFICYP's presence, citing concerns over alleged violations by Turkish forces within the buffer zone. Following his meeting at the Presidential Palace, Lacroix held an unannounced meeting in the occupied areas with Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Erhurman. During these discussions, UN officials including Special Representative Khassim Diagne and negotiator Menelaos Menelaou participated. Both sides reiterated the importance of a stable environment on the ground to facilitate political progress. The government representative Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed Cyprus's readiness for a broad conference on the Cyprus issue. UN representatives reaffirmed their commitment to assisting the peace process while noting that the peacekeeping force remains focused on conflict prevention and de-escalation.
