Turkish Cypriot leadership condemns the burning of flags during Easter celebrations
During Easter celebrations, reports emerged that individuals in the Republic of Cyprus burned flags of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Turkey, alongside a poster of former Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar. The incident, which took place at traditional bonfire sites, drew sharp criticism from Turkish Cypriot officials. Tufan Erhurman characterized the act as an expression of ignorance and a lack of culture. Prime Minister Unal Ustel and parliamentary speaker Ziya Ozturkler condemned the incident as a provocation that undermines peace and communal harmony. They also criticized recent statements made by President Nikos Christodoulides and Archbishop Georgios regarding the Cyprus issue and the historical legacy of EOKA. Turkish Cypriot officials argued that such actions demonstrate a failure to move beyond historical hostilities. The Greek Cypriot leadership was urged by Turkish Cypriot representatives to publicly denounce these incidents to prevent the further escalation of inter-communal tension.
