Chios rocket war proceeds despite legal controversies
On Holy Saturday night, the traditional 'Rocket War' (Rouketopolemos) took place in Vrontados, Chios, involving the rival parishes of Panagia Erithiani and Agios Markos. Thousands of handmade rockets were launched shortly before midnight, marking a culmination of festivities that drew tourists and international media. The event occurred despite significant legal tensions during the preceding week. An accidental ignition at a production site earlier in the week resulted in four hospitalizations and the arrest of seven individuals. Three of those arrested faced prosecution for fireworks law violations and negligence, leading to local protests in support of the detainees. Uncertainty regarding the event's cancellation persisted until late Saturday afternoon, when a joint parade led by astrophysicist Stamatis Krimigis confirmed the proceedings would go ahead. Local officials, including Mayor Yannis Malafis, stated their objective is to balance the preservation of local tradition with safety regulations.
