Demographic breakdown of prisoners in Cyprus correctional facilities
According to Nikoletta Tyrimou, spokesperson for the Cypriot Ministry of Justice and Public Order, there are currently 1,182 prisoners held in Cyprus. Out of this total, 616 individuals are foreign nationals, accounting for 52% of the prison population. Among the detainees, nine are citizens of the Russian Federation. This figure represents less than one percent of the total prisoner count. Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov previously noted that over 150,000 Russian citizens permanently reside on the island. Authorities attribute the high proportion of foreign inmates to Cyprus's geographic position as a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as migration and tourism trends.
