Peter Magyar elected as new prime minister of Hungary
Peter Magyar, a 45-year-old lawyer and former member of the Fidesz party, has won the April 12, 2026, parliamentary elections, ending Viktor Orban's 16-year rule. Magyar founded the Tisza party in 2020 and rose to prominence after exposing alleged government corruption. He is expected to take office no earlier than May 5, 2026, and has already initiated talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The new government aims to unlock 18 billion euros in frozen EU funds, secure 16 billion euros in defense loans, and resolve daily 1 million euro fines related to immigration policy. Regarding Ukraine, Magyar stated he would support a 90 billion euro loan under existing conditions, but explicitly ruled out Ukraine's EU accession in the near future. He has called on President Tamas Sulyok to convene parliament as soon as possible, with final results expected by May 4.
