Fatal building collapse in Germasogeia, Limassol
On the afternoon of Holy Saturday, an apartment building in Germasogeia, Limassol, collapsed, resulting in at least two confirmed fatalities. Three other individuals were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and rescue teams continue to search for a potential third victim under the debris. The structure, which was over 40 years old, had been officially classified as dangerous by the Limassol District Local Government Organisation. Official records indicate that the authorities had issued warning letters to the building's seven owners as recently as March 26, 2026, demanding urgent structural repairs and evacuation. Despite these warnings, the building continued to be occupied and listed on online rental platforms. Amathounta Mayor Kyriakos Xydias expressed condolences and pledged a full investigation into the responsibilities of all parties involved starting next week. The government has also promised support for the victims' families and a thorough investigation into the causes of the tragedy to prevent future incidents.
