Dangerous buildings under scrutiny following fatal collapse in Germasogeia
Following the fatal collapse of a residential building in Germasogeia on Easter Saturday, which resulted in two deaths, authorities in Cyprus have launched a widespread review of dangerous structures. Reports indicate approximately 780 buildings in the Limassol district are flagged as potentially dangerous, with 80 requiring immediate action. In Paphos, 226 structures have been identified as unsafe, including 71 within municipal limits. Officials from the District Local Government Organizations (EOA), ETEK, and the Union of Municipalities are meeting to coordinate efforts, including the development of an electronic platform for building identification. Investigators are currently examining evidence regarding the Germasogeia collapse, as it was previously declared unsafe but remained occupied. The Limassol CID is preparing a file for the Legal Service with recommendations for potential criminal prosecutions against owners and responsible parties. Some authorities have noted that heavy rainfall may have exacerbated pre-existing structural issues in buildings that lacked proper maintenance.
