Building collapse in Germasogeia results in two deaths
On Holy Saturday, the eastern section of an apartment block in Germasogeia, Cyprus, collapsed, resulting in two confirmed deaths. The building, which was over 40 years old, had been flagged as dangerous by the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (EOA), which had issued notices for renovation to the owners. Rescue efforts involving the Fire Service, EMAK, and Civil Defence began around 1:30 p.m. to clear debris and support the structure. Four individuals were transported to hospitals, with reports indicating they are in stable, non-life-threatening condition. Initial estimates suggest the building contained 8 to 10 apartments, with five to six people present during the incident. Authorities are currently utilizing interpreters to communicate with the residents, who are foreign nationals from various countries. Investigations are ongoing to determine if more individuals remain trapped under the rubble.
