Authorities in Cyprus intensify inspections of dangerous buildings
Following a fatal building collapse in Yermasoyia, Limassol, authorities have accelerated efforts to identify and address structurally unsafe properties nationwide. The Limassol District Self-Government Organization (EOA) placed warning labels on 36 dangerous buildings and is seeking court orders for the evacuation of high-risk structures, including the Seagate apartment complex. In Nicosia, the EOA reported 1,466 active cases, noting that 1,198 were inherited from previous administrations in April 2025. Meanwhile, the Larnaca EOA expressed concerns regarding poor record-keeping and lack of transparency, revealing they inherited 563 cases, some dating back to 2018. Owners are legally responsible for maintenance, yet authorities face challenges with missing contact information for owners and unclear processes for accessing a recently announced €2 million national restoration fund. Critics argue that administrative responses have been slow, often requiring tragedy to trigger action.
