Celebration of the 'Botides' tradition in Corfu and Geri

On Holy Saturday, the traditional 'Botides' ritual took place in Corfu and was also replicated in Geri. The event in Corfu, which dates back to the Venetian era, occurs following the morning procession of Saint Spyridon. Participants throw large, water-filled, red-painted clay pots from balconies to symbolize the earthquake following the Resurrection and the triumph over evil. In Geri, the folklore association and local schools organized a reenactment at 11:30 a.m. The pots used in Geri were uniquely inscribed with the names of occupied municipalities and villages in Cyprus. In Corfu, the ritual is accompanied by cannon fire from the Old Fortress and the ringing of bells. Spectators often collect fragments of the shattered pottery as tokens of good luck.
