Police search warrant against lawyer Nikos Clerides sparks legal and political controversy

In the early hours of Holy Saturday, Cyprus police executed search warrants at the residence and law office of lawyer Nikos Clerides in connection with the 'Sandy' case, which involves allegations made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis. During the operation, authorities seized mobile phones and searched computer data for keywords related to alleged financial scandals. Clerides' legal team, led by Christos Clerides, has filed complaints with the Data Protection Commissioner, GRECO, and GRAVO, citing violations of attorney-client privilege and privacy rights. The police defended the operation, stating it was conducted legally based on verified testimony and that there is no targeting of individuals. Lawyer Achilleas Emilianides criticized the lack of safeguards for attorneys, while the AKEL party questioned why investigations focus on whistleblowers rather than the accused. Clerides intends to challenge the search warrant at the Supreme Court, seeking the return of the seized devices to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive client information.
