Orthodox Easter celebrations held across Cyprus in April 2026
During the Holy Week and Easter Sunday, observed on April 12, 2026, faithful across Cyprus participated in religious services and traditional celebrations. On Holy Saturday, the 'First Resurrection' service was held in churches throughout the island, marked by the scattering of laurel leaves and the symbolic banging of benches to represent the earthquake of the Resurrection. While the Holy Synod and Archbishopric had requested a more solemn observance, some priests, such as one in Kornos, continued traditional expressive practices. On Easter Sunday, church bells rang for the Vespers of Love, featuring the reading of the Gospel in multiple languages. Families gathered to share traditional meals, including spit-roasted lamb, red eggs, flaounes, and pasta. Reports noted that weather conditions included cloudiness and rain in mountainous regions. Public life remained centered around these cultural and religious customs, honoring the traditions of the island.
