Stalled US-Iran negotiations and tensions over the Strait of Hormuz
Negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad concluded without a deal, as Iran rejected six conditions set by President Donald Trump. These conditions included ending uranium enrichment, dismantling damaged facilities, recovering 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, and stopping support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the US presented a final offer, while Tehran counter-proposed a five-year nuclear freeze, which was rejected by Washington. Amid these talks, the US has initiated a naval blockade to restrict Iranian oil exports, and Tehran is reportedly considering a temporary suspension of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to avoid escalation. Tensions remain high as both sides prepare for a potential second round of talks in Islamabad this weekend, mediated by Pakistan. Iran’s lead negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf emphasized that Iran will not yield to threats. The future of the nuclear program and freedom of navigation through the strategic strait remain the primary points of contention.
