Recent diplomatic developments between US and Russia regarding Ukraine and Iran
On April 29, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a 90-minute telephone call to discuss international crises. Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with the Victory Day anniversary on May 8, which Trump acknowledged. The leaders also addressed the nuclear program of Iran, with Putin suggesting transferring enriched uranium to Moscow, a proposal Trump has so far resisted in favor of direct US involvement. Meanwhile, a maritime standoff continues in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US maintains a naval blockade of Iranian ports following the conflict that began on February 28. Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strait before negotiating nuclear issues, emphasizing that the blockade remains more effective than military strikes. Iran has warned of potential military action in response to US seizures of Iranian-linked vessels. Shipping activity through the Strait remains significantly reduced compared to pre-war levels.
