Cyprus prepares for 2026 parliamentary elections
The General Election Commissioner and Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Elikkos Ilias, announced that preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections on May 24, 2026, are underway. Officials expect a record number of candidacies, surpassing the 651 candidates registered in 2021, with official figures to be confirmed on May 6. Currently, there are 28 to 29 political parties registered in the national registry, compared to the 15 party combinations and 7 independent candidates observed in 2021. The electoral process will involve approximately 1,195 polling stations and 6,860 staff members, including 1,185 police officers. Regarding the use of traditional opaque ballot boxes, Ilias emphasized that these ensure voter secrecy. He also expressed hope for an increase in female participation compared to the 160 female candidates in the previous cycle. The Commissioner stated that the proceedings are expected to be smooth and secure.
