Reported 2020 arms deal between Venezuela and Iran
According to internal Venezuelan Defense Ministry documents cited by Politico, the government of Nicolas Maduro considered purchasing a ballistic missile system from Iran in January 2020. The proposed deal, estimated to exceed $400 million, reportedly included plans to mount missiles on Venezuelan naval vessels for long-range strike capabilities. The project was allegedly formalized in a memorandum approved by then-Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez. The United States government, under the Trump administration, closely monitored these discussions and deemed the potential acquisition unacceptable. Elliot Abrams, the former U.S. special envoy for Iran and Venezuela, stated that Washington made its opposition clear to Caracas. Ultimately, the transaction did not proceed, citing pressure from the United States and Venezuela's ongoing domestic economic crisis. These revelations suggest that strategic cooperation between Caracas and Tehran was more advanced than previously publicly acknowledged.
