Nicosia hosts international climate conference

The international conference titled “Climate Action in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East: Regional Cooperation Supported by Science and Innovation” is taking place in Nicosia on April 8 and 9. Held under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the event is co-organized by the Cyprus Institute and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. President Nikos Christodoulides officially opened the event, urging participants to move beyond dialogue toward delivering tangible outcomes. The conference gathers scientists, policymakers, and representatives of international organizations to address the Eastern Mediterranean’s status as a climate-vulnerable region. European Commissioner Dubravka Šuica also addressed the assembly, noting that economic pressures from climate impacts and fossil fuel prices are currently affecting the area. The discussions focus on aligning science, policy, and innovation to improve regional climate resilience. Participants explored the potential of the Mediterranean, particularly the southern region, for renewable energy development. The stated goal of the conference is to strengthen regional cooperation to build more sustainable and resilient economies.
