Man referred to Limassol Criminal Court for assaulting a state prosecutor

On Maundy Thursday, a 42-year-old man already serving a four-year sentence for kidnapping his former partner was referred to the Limassol Criminal Court. The defendant faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm under Article 231 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison. The assault occurred on April 3 inside a Limassol courtroom after the defendant reacted to his kidnapping sentencing by punching the state prosecutor, causing a broken nose and swelling to her upper lip. Security measures were tightened for his transport to the court due to the nature of the incident. The case will be heard by a different panel of judges than the one that sentenced him for the kidnapping case. His defense attorney, Katia Pieroudi, did not object to the prosecution's request to keep the defendant in custody. The trial is scheduled to begin on April 23.
