President Christodoulides speaks with Lebanese President Aoun on the conflict

On April 9, 2026, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held his fifth telephone conversation with the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun. President Christodoulides expressed deep concern regarding ongoing Israeli attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure in Lebanon, noting the high number of casualties. He emphasized that the existing ceasefire must be utilized for broad de-escalation and diplomatic efforts to ensure stability. The discussion highlighted the vital role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the necessity of upholding UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Christodoulides stressed the importance of protecting peacekeeping forces and respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, the Republic of Cyprus announced the provision of 300,000 euros in humanitarian aid to support the affected Lebanese population. Cyprus also reaffirmed its readiness to offer further support to assist with the ongoing crisis.
