Cyprus addresses regulation on net metering surplus electricity
Current regulations in Cyprus require the clearing of accumulated kilowatt-hours for net metering systems every 36 months without compensation for unused energy. This policy has led to public backlash as residents receive electricity bills that do not account for their surplus production. Critics argue the current framework discourages energy efficiency by forcing consumers to increase usage to avoid the total loss of their stored energy. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) stated it is acting in accordance with government ministry guidelines and contractual obligations. In response, the Parliament of Cyprus has unanimously approved a legislative proposal to allow for the compensation of erased surplus energy. This new framework authorizes the Council of Ministers to issue decrees intended to create a fairer system for self-consumption. The initiative seeks to close existing legislative gaps and address the concerns of homeowners regarding their solar energy investments.
