Concerns over lack of formal regulation for Easter lampratzies in Cyprus
The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation has raised concerns regarding the absence of comprehensive legislative regulation for the traditional Easter bonfire custom, known as lampratzies, in Cyprus. The organization argues that despite the general Municipalities Law prohibiting fires in urban areas without a permit, current practices lack specific oversight. These practices have reportedly led to unauthorized tree cutting and the placement of bonfires in unsafe locations. The Ecologists emphasize that tradition should not supersede public safety, environmental protection, or the integrity of private and public property. Authorities are facing increasing pressure to address these issues to prevent potential accidents and mitigate risks to the urban and natural landscape. The movement calls for mandatory coordination between those organizing the fires and local authorities to ensure safe implementation. While the tradition remains popular, officials and activists agree that existing measures remain insufficient to prevent potential hazards.
