Cypriot foreign minister seeks regional de-escalation amid contested ceasefire

Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos held separate discussions with his Lebanese counterpart Youssef Raghi, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday. Kombos called for the immediate implementation of a US-Iran ceasefire across the entire region, including Lebanon, to facilitate comprehensive diplomacy. The status of the ceasefire remains a point of contention, as Israel maintains that its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon are separate from the agreement brokered with Pakistani mediation. Conversely, Lebanon has demanded a comprehensive ceasefire covering all fronts, while Iran has indicated that Israeli strikes could lead to its withdrawal from the agreement. In his talks, Kombos emphasized the necessity of protecting civilians, upholding international humanitarian law, and ensuring freedom of navigation. Iran continues to maintain a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to target unauthorized vessels. The Cypriot minister warned that the failure to fully implement the ceasefire threatens the stability of the entire region.
