International investigation exposes Fancy Bear cyber espionage operation
Intelligence and law enforcement agencies from the U.S., Canada, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Poland, and other countries have uncovered a widespread espionage campaign conducted by the Russian hacking group Fancy Bear. The hackers targeted military and government infrastructure, as well as critical services, by compromising Wi-Fi routers. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that the group bypassed security protocols and encryption to steal passwords, authentication tokens, and sensitive email data. According to anonymous officials involved in the operation, the attackers redirected traffic specifically toward government domains, military systems, and communication platforms like Microsoft Outlook. The SBU stated that Russian intelligence agencies placed particular emphasis on intercepted communications between sensitive entities. The group utilized the stolen data to facilitate further cyberattacks, sabotage, and intelligence gathering. The joint international effort aims to neutralize these vulnerabilities and mitigate the impact of the data exfiltration.
