Turkish officials issue series of provocative statements regarding Cyprus

Turkish officials, including the chairman of the parliamentary defence committee Hulusi Akar and the Ministry of Defence, have issued a series of statements regarding the Cyprus issue in April 2026. Akar stated on April 2 that Cyprus is not a Greek island and insisted that the existence of two sovereign, equal states is inevitable. On April 7, he posted a message on social media threatening Greek Cypriots that the upcoming Easter would be their last. Simultaneously, the Turkish Ministry of Defence criticized the commemoration of the EOKA anniversary in the Republic of Cyprus, labeling EOKA a terrorist organization and claiming that framing its history as a freedom struggle distorts reality. The Ministry further alleged that such narratives harm peace efforts and trust on the island. Turkish officials also referenced alleged threats against civilians in the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus'. These remarks have been characterized as provocative and escalatory by international observers.
