Consumer survey reveals significant financial strain among households in Cyprus

A 2026 consumer behavior survey by P.E.K.Poi.Zo. and Cypronetwork Ltd, presented in Nicosia, indicates that 66% of households in Cyprus face financial difficulties. While 34% of respondents report living comfortably, the remainder struggle to varying degrees, with 2% facing survival difficulties. Although two-thirds of households maintain stable incomes, 90% of consumers report rising costs, particularly for food, electricity, and essential services. Data shows that 40% of households hold bank loans, with 70% of those borrowers describing their debt burden as significant. Furthermore, consumer sentiment remains pessimistic, with one-third expecting economic decline in the coming months and only 16% expressing optimism. The survey also highlights widespread dissatisfaction with government transparency and responsiveness, with negative ratings reaching up to 75%. Additionally, 70% of consumers reported a lack of awareness regarding their legal rights as buyers.
