President Christodoulides questions constitutionality of recent legislative package

On Wednesday, President Nikos Christodoulides expressed concern regarding the legislative process and the composition of the next parliament during the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress. He criticized the House of Representatives for passing approximately 100 bills in its final session before the elections, suggesting that many were rushed or potentially unconstitutional. The President specifically highlighted concerns over new laws concerning non-performing loans and the foreclosure of mortgaged properties. Christodoulides stated he is reviewing these legislative acts to decide whether to sign them, refer them back to parliament, or appeal to the Supreme Court. He emphasized that his decisions will be based on the future of the country rather than the upcoming elections. Legal authorities have already signaled potential conflicts between some of the passed provisions and the constitution. The President maintained that he will adhere to institutional procedures to resolve these disputes.
