Cypriot president monitors reported US-Iran two-week ceasefire
President Nikos Christodoulides addressed reports of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on Wednesday during the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress. The ceasefire was reportedly declared by US President Donald Trump early Wednesday morning following a series of social media threats and an appeal from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. While the agreement has been publicised, President Christodoulides expressed caution, stating he hopes the reports are confirmed to ensure regional de-escalation. Cyprus holds a particular interest in these developments due to its current rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. Furthermore, the island is scheduled to host an informal European Council summit shortly after Easter, where the regional situation will be a primary topic of discussion. The President emphasised that de-escalation is a fundamental goal for the region, the European Union, and the international community. While the Pakistani government claims the ceasefire is effective immediately, international verification remains a key focal point for regional leaders.
