United States and Iran agree to a two-week ceasefire
The United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire following weeks of escalating tensions in the region. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa welcomed the agreement as a necessary step toward de-escalation. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas noted the deal aims to halt missile activity, restore maritime navigation, and provide a window for diplomatic negotiations. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was credited by EU officials for his role in mediating the agreement. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also endorsed the ceasefire, urging both parties to adhere to the terms to achieve lasting peace. EU leadership has expressed readiness to support continued diplomatic efforts aimed at a durable solution. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Guterres separately cautioned the United States and Israel against targeting civilian infrastructure during operations. The ceasefire is intended to create space for a permanent resolution to the regional conflict.
